ABSTRACT
The word “ontology” has entered economic literature recently. It refers, one may recall, to the branch of metaphysics that deals with the nature of being or existence. The charge that introduced the subject into economics is that economics, especially economic theory as it is now done in the mainstream, does not give sufficient attention to ontology. It does not, in other words, give proper regard to the nature of economic institutions, structures, and actors.
