ABSTRACT

China is a great oriental nation representing thousands of years of historical and cultural traditions. As a result of its oriental heritage, ideographic language and long-term underdevelopment, developed western countries came to believe that China was a remote and mysterious oriental country. However, China, nicknamed the ‘sleeping lion’ by Napoleon, has in recent decades – through structural economic reforms – achieved great social transformation. The ‘sleeping lion’ seems to have truly awoken, and has shocked the world. As people reflect on China’s development, what significance does this have for the world’s established economic and political systems? What kind of country is China exactly? How do we understand Chinese society and the China Experience?
