Introduction

Not very long ago, Asian popular culture was all but ignored in the academic community. But, until the late 1960s and early 1970s, so was popular culture studies more generally. Aspects of popular culture, such as broadcasting and film, had hesitatingly been given a small space in some university curricula earlier, but not all-encompassing popular culture courses.
