ABSTRACT

The following chapter synthesizes research on the use of various treatment modalities for anxiety disorders, including psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and the combination of the two. The latter modality is of particular interest given the widespread usage of this treatment strategy in clinical practice and the paucity of research documenting its efficacy (Olfson, Marcus, Wan, & Geissler, 2004). Combined treatment makes rational sense, and perhaps for this reason it has not been examined empirically to the same extent as psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy individually.
