ABSTRACT
How has the recognizably ‘modern’ society of the last 200 years in England and Wales responded to investigative needs? Although there has been much recent attention paid to policing, relatively little systematic attention has been paid to criminal investigation. What follows will attempt, therefore, to trace investigation in England and Wales, from the creation of the Metropolitan Police to the present day.
