ABSTRACT
The Turkish Republic was proclaimed on 29 October 1923. The National Assembly was by then dominated by the People’s Party, for which Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had earlier laid the foundations. With this support he was now able to put an end to the caliphate. It was abolished on 1 March 1924.
