ABSTRACT
The American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) (1999) identifies five learning goals of language: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. However, most students and their parents focus on the speaking dimension of communication: parents ask their children, “Can you speak the language?” (Bailey, 2005). Of all these five ACTFL language areas, students develop least in their speaking skills, and their inability to express themselves has a negative impact on their confidence and enthusiasm (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills, 2008).
