ABSTRACT

In 2010, 1,920 community colleges served 8,185,725 students, or nearly 42% of all undergraduates in postsecondary education in the U.S. (Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 2010). More than 5,000,000 learners were enrolled in noncredit-bearing programs. Over 370,600 faculty (Condition of Education, 2008) educated students at these institutions that conferred 555,000 associate’s degrees and 295,000 certifi cates (American Association of Community Colleges, 2008). Clearly, community colleges play a prominent role in the higher education landscape.
