ABSTRACT

Th e community college is fundamentally about educational programs. Whether it is basic law enforcement training, a single course toward the associate’s degree, or an entire degree curriculum, the comprehensive community college is committed to improving quality of life through a variety of educational programs. In this chapter, we discuss program planning in the community college. Similar to others (e.g., Boone, Safrit, & Jones, 2002; Caff arella, 2002), we defi ne an educational program as an event or series of events developed within an institutional context and intended to promote learning. Th is defi nition is intentionally broad, because we plan to address not only formal academic and vocational study but also informal programs (Merriam, Caff arella, & Baumgartner, 2007).
