ABSTRACT

This chapter opens with an historical overview of the immigration and settlement of Orthodox people in Australia set within the wider story of Australia as an immigrant nation. This leads to an account of the formation of Orthodox religious communities in Australia from the late-nineteenth century to the present. A central part of this chapter is a discussion of some identifying elements of Orthodoxy in Australia. The chapter concludes with some reflections on ethnic separatism and pan-Orthodoxy as alternative future developments for Orthodoxy in Australia.
