ABSTRACT

St Nikodemos the Haghiorite (1749–1809) was the reviver of Hesychasm on Mount Athos in the late eighteenth century (Sherrard 1989). With St Macarius of Corinth he compiled the Philokalia, and was the author or editor of a further twenty-seven books on spiritual, liturgical, canonical, hagiographical and exegetical themes which made a vital contribution to the shaping of Orthodox identity in Greece in the decades before and after the War of Independence (1821–32) and continue to be very influential.
