ABSTRACT
If “ecclesiology” means conscious, sustained theological reflection on the nature and being of the Church, it is a modern phenomenon within the Orthodox Church. This ought not to discredit the discipline, as it might to someone who believes that only the old can be true. It is only to note that there is no early church “doctrine of the Church” as such that would be on a par with an early church Christology or Trinitarian theology.
