ABSTRACT

Newark Liberty International Airport is major a hub of international commerce and transportation. Covering over 425 acres, Newark Airport is one of the leading skyways into the New York metropolitan area and is the third-busiest airport in the United States. In 2006 alone, 35,764,910 passengers and 95,658 pieces of airmail passed through its terminals. Ironically, very few of these individuals ever enter the city for which the airport was named. Similarly, three interstate highways pass through and around the periphery of the city: Interstate 78, Interstate 280, and the New Jersey Turnpike. Like the airport, they serve as conduits for a considerable flow of commuter traffic and are essential to the economic well-being of the metropolitan area. These thoroughfares pass over, around, and through Newark, but the city and its residents are marginal to much of this activity.
