ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the practical application of sustainability goals and principles in three areas of transportation infrastructure: 1) roads and highways; 2) inter-city passenger and freight rail systems (railroads); and 3) intra-city transit systems, including rail and bus (transit). 1 While each of these transportation modes has its own specific definitions and practices around sustainability, some goals are common. These goals, outlined in Table 10.1, provide important clarification for this industry beyond the general definitions of sustainability.
