ABSTRACT

Based on trade policy analysis covering five Arab countries – Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) and Sudan – the purpose of this book has been threefold: first, to examine the relationship between trade liberalization, growth, employment, unemployment and poverty in these countries; second, to examine the potential gains from regional integration and to outline a development strategy aimed at reducing unemployment and poverty. The strategy should be geared towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals 1 and 8, namely eradicating extreme poverty and enhancing regional partnership and integration for development. To assist with the task of formulating such a development- and trade-driven strategy, the third purpose of this book has been to construct some key quantitative indicators on trade patterns and structures in these countries, and between them, other Arab countries and other trade partners.
