ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on low-carbon innovation in China, the world's second largest economy and largest user of energy. It draws on the results of a UK-China collaborative research project that was funded by the UK government. Through the use of four case studies, the chapter examines the relative contributions of indigenous innovation and international technology transfer to China's low-carbon innovation journey so far. It uses this evidence to draw lessons for national and international policy, and to reflect on the on-going debate about technology assistance to developing countries under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
