ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss three salient areas related to Bowen’s theoretical formulation of the ability of the individual to distinguish between the emotional and intellectual systems, an essential component of differentiation of self. The fi rst area will address what Bowen actually proposes about the emotional and intellectual systems and the challenge of differentiation of systems for the individual. The second will review relevant fi ndings from research in neuroscience that provide empirical support for Bowen’s viewpoint. The third will review fi ndings that point to grey or still-to-be-resolved issues regarding the integration of emotion and cognition.
