ABSTRACT

Interest in tourism as a tool for sustainability and poverty reduction grew significantly in the 1980s. Two movements were launched almost simultaneously: ecotourism and community-based tourism (CBT) (SNV and UH-University of Hawaii 2007; UNWTO 2004, 2006. The ideas associated with both ecotourism and CBT have often been associated with the promotion of tourism to benefit the communities that reside in or near conservation areas. In Brazil, many organizations, such as the WWF, SOS Mata Atlântica and the Sociedade de Pesquisa em Vida Silvestre e Educação Ambiental (SPVS), have consistently promoted the sustainable development of community-based tourism. In the 1990s and 2000s, several projects were undertaken in Latin America, many of which were established in biomes across Brazil.
