ABSTRACT

Managing collections in museums needs a system, and the system is best set out in a Collections Management Plan. This plan describes clearly and simply, but in some detail, how the museum looks after its collections. Its purpose is both to remind members of the governing body, staff and volunteers what their responsibilities to the collections are, and to tell donors and users how the museum fulfils its duties. It forms a key input into the museum’s Forward Plan (see Unit 88). It is a very good idea to publish the Collections Management Plan on the museum’s website.
