ABSTRACT

In this unit, we look at the general principles of storing collections of all types. Unit 65 examines in more detail the practice of storing different types of collections.

In many museums, the bulk of the collections is likely to be in store rather than on display and more space is likely to be needed for storage of collections than for display. There is no set prescription for storage facilities, as much will depend on the nature and mix of a museum’s collections and the museum’s policy towards their acquisition, display, exhibition and use.
