ABSTRACT

Physical security is an essential component of museum management. Museum directors have a special responsibility to ensure that their buildings are secure, and that effective physical defences, security systems and procedures, and appropriate levels of staffing are in place during the day and night (see Figure 79.1 and Units 71-72). Each museum will vary in terms of the level of protection it is able to provide. Different types of buildings will require different levels of protection related to their use. Different types of collections will require different forms of protection, depending on their significance or value.
