ABSTRACT

Genetic engineering (GE) or genetic modification (GM) technologies based on recombinant DNA (rDNA) arose in the 1970s and provided a wide range of products, including pharmaceuticals, industrial compounds, crops, and foods. The biosafety concerns related to these technologies and their products were expressed early on by the very scientists pioneering the technology (Berg et al. 1974). As a result, biosafety regulations were quickly promulgated in various countries to address the legitimate safety concerns regarding rDNA and its products to both human health and the environment.
