ABSTRACT

Much of the academic research on sport media over the past 30 years has examined the amount and types of coverage received by female athletes and women’s sport when compared with content on men’s sport and male athletes. Hundreds of studies have shown that sport media generally devote considerably more space and provide greater emphasis to male athletes regardless of the type of sport, level or age of competitors, form of medium, or host country of the media outlet (for example, Bruce, Hovden, and Markula, 2010; Duncan and Messner, 2000).
