ABSTRACT
For female athletes, the playing field can be a minefield. Women have more opportunities to participate in athletic programs than ever before, yet fewer opportunities than men. Women receive credit for their strength and athletic abilities, but they are more popular and more economically successful if they are pretty. Female athletes take home gold medals and championship trophies, but their roles as mothers, sex symbols, and fashionistas are often what make headlines.
