ABSTRACT

Despite clues to a growing interest in this field, there are not many works of research dedicated to the study of TV sportscasting. This lack of production – that we see as patent, considering the importance of sports in contemporary societies, as well as the effects of its broadcasting – can be explained by two factors. The first explanation is that sports lack social as well as scientific legitimacy. In fact, sports could be considered as doubly unworthy of such study, as it is at the crossroad of social and media practices, which are synonymous with alienation and other forms of escapism. The second explanation is the barriers separating fields of study that are specialized in and focused on either the verbal dimension or the visual dimension of this syncretic media discourse. In this chapter, we focus on the latter factor, to take into account what has already been done in these two fields of research and clearly state our own take on this subject.
