ABSTRACT

A few blocks from the Hunter College campus where I teach, Latino workers gather every day on a street corner in front of a paint store waiting for a contractor to pull up in a van and offer them a temporary job. This is in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, arguably the wealthiest neighborhood in the world, where boutiques sell $5,000 shoes and few people hang out on the streets. Such gaping inequalities are all too common in New York City.
