ABSTRACT

This chapter considers issues surrounding the use of information and communications technology (ICT) to aid and support assessment of all subjects in the secondary curriculum. It explores how traditional teaching methods are fusing with and being reinforced by technology. The chapter shows that how dialogic pedagogies are being embraced and adapted to reinforce learning in the classroom. Virtual learning environments or managed learning environments are built around Assessment for learning principles with peer- and self-assessment embedded into assessed tasks. The chapter addresses the challenges faced by an educational system in England that is struggling to assess ICT and assess with ICT and compares it with its international competitors. It examines state of online and computer based assessment is summarised and the potential future direction for England's educational system is explored by looking at the tension raised by the increased use of PISA table rankings.
