ABSTRACT

Tourism is big business, and there are various measures of how big it is. Indeed, there is a growing literature that is dedicated to measuring the size of it both from demand- and supply-side perspectives (e.g. Song et al. 2010; Tourism Satellite Account: Recommended Methodological Framework 2008). However, the question remains how large tourism will be in the future as an industry, how tourism and the experience of tourism will evolve and what role the state will have in terms of regulating and subsidizing tourism. This paper will explore these questions to look into how the state will interact with tourism in the next 20 to 50 years.
