ABSTRACT

Most religions have much to say about sexuality, marriage, and family. For example, Biblical teachings contain several such themes—sexual morality (Colossians 3:5: “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires”), faithfulness to one's partner (Hebrews 13:4: “Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery”), and propagation (Genesis 1:28: “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth”). Over the last decade, much research has been done to examine whether and why religion leads to certain sexual attitudes and behaviors. Likewise, there is a growing literature on how religion influences marriage and childrearing.
