ABSTRACT

The conference had as one of its main objectives that of acting as a national forum for discussion between those most concerned with curriculum development in this area. To implement this objective discussion groups were set up and the proceedings recorded. Re-organisation might for example leave teacher education in polytechnics in competition with prestigious schools or faculties, for example, accountancy with its high earning power. Moreover, the teacher educators themselves whether in universities or polytechnics might be dispersed into existing departments so losing the coherence familiar in the monotechnic institution. The idea of a college of education as a community college was mooted; providing continuing education to those who needed it in the locality. It was stated that not all persons wanted an Open University method of obtaining a degree but that part-time courses in college leading to a degree or other worthwhile qualifications could meet needs in the community.
