ABSTRACT

The teacher’s role as initiator of the young was relatively free from conflict while a situation of general agreement existed in society as to what constituted right values and standards. Conflict with the prevailing tendencies of the culture will be a continuance of the ‘missionary’ and ‘crusader’ theme which has been a strong characteristic of the profession. The conflict schedules had suggested that teachers were expected to uphold such values and standards as part of their teaching function but at the same time it was suggested that such values were increasingly ignored in society. Loyalty to the school was another value position where many teachers found themselves in conflict with a changing social ethos. Grammar-schoolteachers in particular stressed this aspect of value conflict, although it was mentioned by teachers in all types of school. The ‘adapted’ teacher will come to terms with the conflict situation and attempt some kind of workable synthesis of traditional and emergent values.
