ABSTRACT

Materials are routinely selected for aesthetic and functional reasons but a fashion designer can choose to work with recovered materials, which positively contributes to the management of textile waste. Australian fashion label Romance Was Born regularly work with reclaimed fabrics for its fashion collections. The Sydney-based fashion label, founded by Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, is revered for its use of unusual and eclectic materials, handcraft techniques and eccentric, playful styling. The Garden of Eden collection, worked in collaboration with Del Kathryn Barton, included craft techniques and patchwork fabrics, over-the-top embellishment and found objects. This signature style enables the designers to provide their customer with a uniquely individual garment, a one-of-a-kind piece that is created as an item to be treasured.
