ABSTRACT

Self-sufficiency and self-reliance are the key motives behind the national concept of sustainability in Thailand, as outlined in the philosophy of ‘Sufficiency Economy’ and ‘New Theory Agriculture’. This chapter focuses on the implementation of these ideas in existing suburban households in Thailand, in order to illustrate the possibility of an alternative fair earth share lifestyle. Self-reliance in food, water and energy as a suburban basic need is investigated, and the ecological footprint is used as an indicator to see how implementation can contribute to lessening human impacts on the environment, as well as to illustrate a better use of available resources.
