ABSTRACT

This chapter is designed to provide the reader with an overview of Canada’s military involvement in international conflicts, the psychological impact upon those involved and the development and adaptation of programs designed to address the needs of those injured as a result of their military service. Included are descriptions of Canada’s Operational Stress Injury Social Support Program; the Third Location Decompression Program (TLD), which was developed in 2002 by the Department of National Defence to provide soldiers departing theatre with a rest and relaxation period prior to returning home to family; the CF (Canadian Forces) Member Assistance Program; and Military Family Resource Centres. Finally, two distinctive treatment approaches and illustrative clinical vignettes are described: Neurofeedback (NFB) and the Canadian Veteran Adventure Foundation, which has applied wilderness therapy programs to mentally and physically injured Canadian forces and veterans.
