ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at three areas of global change (climate, technological and population) arguing that these are interconnected and will alter all of our lives. It explores the way in which boundaries are collapsing, leading to the delimitation of the geographic, national, economic, social and personal. I suggest that as the world changes so does the nature of organizations and thus of HRD. This chapter examines the implications of this for the future of HRD and suggests that in an increasing complex world, we need to adopt a holistic perspective through which we can examine the inter-relatedness of the global and local; the economic and the social; the individual and the community. From this I suggest that we also need to consider the need to guard and enhance notions of identity; the development of ethical approaches, and; the role of professional bodies.
