ABSTRACT

The Indian concept of ‘cyclic’ time has contributed to the distinct nature of the Indian cultural landscape and is deeply rooted in the Indian psyche (Malik 1975, 1995). This contrasts with the West where a linear perception of time is the critical determinant for understanding cultural heritage resources. Built heritage in India is treated as part of the living fabric of society and like all living entities changes and transforms through time. History is understood as renewing and regenerating according to the cyclic concept of time. Further, the traditional understanding of the historical Indian cultural landscape is characterized by the domination of cultural geography over history.
