ABSTRACT

Over the past two years, Cal has been developing and refining a literacy model he has called the ‘Literacy Boomerang’ ( Fig. 18.1 ; see also Durrant, 2012a and 2012b). It is a graphic representation of the developments in mainstream literacy practices since the end of the 18th century, based on earlier models created by Miles Myers (1986) and Chip Bruce (1998). More recently, he has added a digital games ‘face’ to the model, something he mischievously refers to as an ‘app’ for the Literacy Boomerang (Durrant, 2012b).
