ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a brief history of population growth, the factors determining human energy needs and the impact of the interaction between energy use and populations on the health of ecosystems. It explores the need for population control, eff ective and equitable food production and the stimulus to develop renewable energies. The importance of culture in reasserting ecosystem health and the continuance of the human species is emphasized.
