ABSTRACT

There is a growing awareness within the conservation community of the complex trade-offs that exist between the goals of biodiversity conservation, human well-being and economic development. As a result of the fragmented landscapes within which most conservation initiatives take place, multiple tradeoffs, whether economic, ecological, political or social in nature, must be taken into consideration. Trade-offs occur at a variety of scales from local to international, and often have to be negotiated across boundaries, both physical and institutional.
