ABSTRACT

According to many sources, climate change is expected to have a significant impact on tourism (Rosenthal 2009, Gossling 2011, Strasdas 2010). Climate-change-induced effects on weather and coastal topography will affect patterns of travel. The tourism industry is itself a contributor, with some 5 percent of energy-related carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions worldwide (UNWTO/UNEP 2008) produced as part of transporting and accommodating tourists. Discussion in tourism literature of risks associated with climate change are not new (Wall and Badke 1994), but the impending challenges are only now beginning to be comprehended by the global industry and individual operators. It is imperative not only to understand the complexity of the risks. As with all industry sectors, tourism businesses need to implement shifts in practices in order to reduce outputs. That is, tourism must become part of the solution.
