ABSTRACT
From birth, and perhaps even from before birth, there is a constant interplay between what the baby is offered and what the baby makes of it. Considering how responsive premature infants are, it is reasonable to suppose that during those last weeks in the womb a baby is a sentient being, even one who can, in some sense, experience being born.
