ABSTRACT

The 1906 earthquake and fire of San Francisco has been extensively researched and written about. 1 So why add yet another article? It seems that the insurance sector—slightly detached from everyday experience—might contribute a diff erent angle to a well-known subject. Also, the insurance sector’s role is a yet under-researched area in the history of the earthquake and fire, both in the field of economic as well as environmental history. 2
