ABSTRACT
Soccer is a hugely popular sport that is played worldwide and the rules of the game need to be interpreted and applied in a highly consistent manner, irrespective of match location. Each match is controlled by a referee, who is assisted by two assistant referees. It is the duty of the match referee to enforce the laws of the game and to safeguard match integrity. Assistant referees help the referee to control the match in accordance with the laws of the game, and this is achieved via verbal and non-verbal communication.
