ABSTRACT

The superior performance of experts compared to their lesser skilled counterparts can be linked to the domain specific training undertaken throughout their careers (Ericsson et al., 1993). This domain specific activity is known as deliberate practice and it is activity designed to advance a current aspect of an individual's performance that requires improvement, e.g. improving an identified weakness in kicking accuracy. It is characterized as being mentally and physically effortful, highly relevant to improving performance, not immediately rewarding, or inherently enjoyable (Ericsson et al., 1993).
