ABSTRACT
At the outset, we must accept the depth and breadth of our own ignorance about the nature of family living, both as scholars and as everyday people. If the model of ‘the family’ is an ideal that fails to reflect the realities of everyday family living, then it follows that most of what we believe we ‘know’ about ‘family life’ is at best unproved, at worst entirely wrong.
