Upon completion of this chapter the reader should be able to:
understand the difference between a developmental and a holistic perspective of the athletic career;
identify normative transitions in athletes’ development in the athletic, psychological, psychosocial, academic and vocational domains;
understand how the HP manager, using the lifespan model, can formulate a developmental/holistic profile of athletes that takes account of the transitions they face; and
identify the benefits of using a lifespan approach in the HP system so as to maximize athletes’ opportunities to prepare for and/or cope with transitions.
