Upon completion of this chapter the reader should be able to:

describe, recognise and understand what it takes to be a successful high performance (HP) coach;

understand the basics of how HP coaches can best be supported by staff, systems and structures to bring out the best in their performers;

recognise what may change in coaching systems at different stages of the athlete’s and coach’s career;

understand the role of performance directors/managers in HP;

describe and understand the construct of ‘nested thinking’ and how can it be used as a basis for optimising HP outcomes; and

recognise the importance of ‘culture’ in HP and how it may best be manipulated.
