Upon completion of this chapter the reader should be able to:
identify reasons for athletic retirement and recognize its influence on the transition out of elite sport;
define and identify multilevel challenges related to the transition out of elite sport;
identify factors that facilitate adjustment to the post-athletic career;
recognize the importance of an idiosyncratic, holistic and lifespan approach when providing career support services to support athletes preparing to retire and those who have retired; and
identify available career support services provided to senior, retiring and retired athletes.
