ABSTRACT

When the fascist movement emerged after the First World War, its aim was to change the image of Italy. The ‘Fascist Revolution’ introduced radical changes in all social areas, and public and private spaces became merged. The people’s mentality was to be shaped according to the educational principles of the ‘New Man’. The fascist leadership wanted every aspect of the country to embrace modernity, and Italy’s physical transformation was an important undertaking that affected both the Italian people and the Italian landscape. Changes had to be visible in order to improve the Italians’ self-confidence and impress foreign observers. This ‘hard legacy’ of fascism is still present in many areas.
