ABSTRACT
Children’s talk and writing often reveals discrepancies between teachers’ learning objectives set out in lesson plans and what children have actually learned. This is particularly true of history. For example, let us begin by considering four instances of pupils’ misconceptions and misunderstandings recorded by Helena Trotter. The topic was the Victorians, taught to a Year 5 class.
